Modifying the Mudguard

Here is the view from above of the mudguard and the tubular framework.
Some trimming down is required We think!

Having trimmed the framework down we were not too happy to see how high above the tyre the mudguard would fit if we did not cut down some of the GRP. The gap between the two would be a couple of inches and we wanted the mudguard to be a lot closer to the tyre.

Once we decided to cut our GRP we started to work on how to bolt the two together. We ended up drilling big holes in the tubes then welding nuts in place.

Here is another view of the welded in nuts, You can see the gap between the tyre and tube is about an inch.

Here's where we had to cut the rear slot in the GRP.

Where the front cut was to be was very close to the front of the GRP, We decided to manufacture a Glass Fibre extension at the front which would form a nice seal around the framework and also we could shape a bit at the front to make it a bit different than boring square !

Here we have fitted the extension piece, when this was nice and dry we will fill the gap in around the frame.

Here we have filled it in round the frame and the shape at the leading edge is being formed.
Lots more dusty filing down to go though!

Here is the Left side with the leading edge filled and trimmed to the shape we require. We did use some Car Body filler to fill the little dimples left after the first rubbing down process.

Now look at this nicely primed and ready for the final Blue coating, We are pleased how close to the tyre it fits and the curve at the front is unique to our car. Actually we were tempted to finish the mudguards in a different colour like White, because we think it looks quite striking in this picture, What do you think?

Before we send the Mudguards off to "Big Jim Stiven" our Painter mate, we coated the inner faces with Rubber paint which will hopefully protect the GRP (Anyway we had the stuff so we might as well use it )

A quick check to see if the left one still fits with all that Rubber underneath, It does!

And now we have got them back from "Big Jim Stiven" the painter and what a good job he has done!
Actually he had to do them twice but thats because I got my finger stuck on the paint when I was Super Glueing the seal on so good old Jim took them back and did them again even better.

Here it is in Daylight, look how close the Mudguard is to the Tyre ! We are well happy.
You can see our new "EBC Greenstuff" brake pads, look well cool.
