Making the Bonnet Catch

Out of our large selection of Catches that we had in our collection, We decided to use this one! We think its off the Sierra Boot (But we might be wrong, It could have been the Granny or the Rover.) We will mount this on a frame attached to the cross member just behind the Radiator.

And here's one we did earlier! We welded up some 1 inch Steel Angle and bolted the catch to it, We wanted to Bolt the angle bracket in place but we did not have enough room to fit the drill in, Doh! Some forward planning eh?. We ended up welding it in place, This will be fine for now but when we eventually decide to upgrade the engine to a V12 Jaguar (Or whatever) we will have to cut it off because the Pinto will not get out past it.

Now we had to attach the operating cable and route it to the passenger footwell.

This is how we made an adjuster for the bonnet cable first we drilled a cable sized hole in a small bolt so when we did up the nut it holds the cable tightly. Then we trimmed the cable support part of the bracket so a small "u" clamp would fit to hold the cable sleeve.

The other side of our Bonnet catch will attach about here, We found our "Exhaust Clamp" was positioned correctly but did not reach the catch so it needed more reach.

This is what we came up with a sheet of 3mm Ally as the extension, with a Angle section to bolt the exhaust clamp to. We have trimmed a couple of nuts so they fit on this side of the clamp and slot into place between the two flat sections. This means we can adjust the depth of the hoop by taking it off and screwing the trimmed nuts in or out, then we lock it in place using the top nuts. And guess what, It works a treat. We will fit another bolt through the Bonnet section for extra strength. We were considering fitting some spreader plates to go out along the Bonnet, but in the end we decided that there was only going to be a pulling load where this clamp is so it will be fine as it is.

And here we have our Boot Operating Handle attached to the trimming in the passenger footwell
