Silencer a can of Nails !

In the past couple of days our Robin Hood supplied Silencer has been rattling away like a "good un" when ticking over or driving at low revs. We decided to sort it out tonight before we went for another long run tomorrow to meet up with the NW Crew on one of their outings.
The rattling was definately coming from the silencer can so we presumed something inside has broken, so off it came and we cut a series of slots in the lower section, once we had taken out the material it became clear what the problem was! The center pipe had split right in the middle and was rubbing together making the awful racket at low speeds.

See!
Its amazing what a racket this split was causing.

This was the easy solution to our problem, I told Joey what we were going to do and he went to our "Metal Store" to find the necessary materials. I was well impressed when he came back with this perforated steel sheet, Just the job well done Joey. It was soon bent to shape and clamped tightly with some Jubilee Clips. Then it was just the matter of refitting the material, but this time spreading it around inside rather than packing it all at one end! Then making a cover to screw in place.

Like so! We fitted the cover with a film of gasket compound that we got from our mate Rob Cowney (Thanks Matey), It is suitable for all sorts of high temperature jobs so our silencer seemed no problem.
Then it was all assembled and we took it for a road test, It sounded lovely, dare we say a bit quieter even!
Now roll on tomorrow and our NW Experience
