Electrolytic Rust Removal

We found this article on the web by "Ted Kinsey" about a demon rust removal technique using a Battery Charger, Baking Soda, Water and a Bucket. look at our Links section for the website of the "British Horological Society".
What shall we try it on ? Well we had the rusty stub axles, lets try it on them. Unfortunately I read the article quite a while ago and could only vaguely remember the exact details, Looking at the picture shows our first mistake, Apparently the polarity is Crucial The "Negative" terminal should be connected to the item not the Positive!!! Silly old us We also used half a tub of "Baking Soda" instead of a teaspoon full,

Even so something seemed to be happening (look at the white stuff coming off the Axle) but we needed a higher waterline! and A plastic bucket with a probe might work better

Right we have now connected the negative to the Stub Axle and the positive to the metal Pot. This is what we found after a couple of hours Look at the scum that has come off the axle, its amazing isn't it.

We cut up a plastic barrel and poured our solution into it instead, and we placed a metal probe over the side of the pot into the water. We connected the negative to the Axle and the Positive to the probe, then left it overnight. Look what we found the next morning !! A lot easier than all that work with the Angle grinder and the wire brush.
We gave our nice clean Axle a coat of Hammerite straight away to stop any further rust appearing, so thats one job out of the way on the Build 2!

Here is our bucket with the nagative lead connected to the Axle and the positive one connected to the Steel Bar
